DCI Hayes is on an awkward internet date when he learns the body pulled from yesterday’s house fire was that of a well known medical consultant, Professor Sir Bill Perriman. Following the post-mortem, his death has been upgraded to murder and the case is assigned to Hayes. As he investigates, Hayes discovers Sir Bill had given expert testimony in several court cases that helped successful convictions. But following several malpractice accusations, Sir Bill’s expertise and competence was compromised, and resulted in successful appeals against those convictions. One case in particular stands out. Sir Bill was also accused of causing the deaths of several of his patients and had been subjected to threats and one instance of assault by angry relatives. Hayes learns that there are many people with a good motive to wish ill on Sir Bill. The question is, who killed Prof. Sir Bill Perriman, renowned medical consultant and expert witness?
